Glock FM 78 Knife — Black

The Glock FM 78 is a fixed-blade utility knife designed for field use by military personnel, law enforcement and outdoor professionals. With an overall length of 290 mm and a blade length of 165 mm, it sits in the mid-range of utility knives: manoeuvrable enough for precision work, long enough to handle heavier tasks.

The blade is made from hardened steel at 55 HRC with a matte black finish that reduces reflections in operational conditions. The top edge is serrated, making it effective on fibrous materials such as ropes, straps and technical clothing without requiring excessive pressure. A 55 HRC rating is a deliberate compromise: it offers good edge retention and impact resistance, and is easier to resharpen in the field than harder grades, though it requires more frequent maintenance in humid or saltwater environments.

The smooth polymer handle is lightweight and does not absorb moisture, but offers less grip when wet compared to aggressively textured handles: the double guard partially compensates by preventing the hand from slipping towards the blade. The lanyard hole at the base allows attachment to a retention ring or safety system. The polymer sheath accepts belts up to 60 mm wide and features an integrated thumb-break clip for single-handed drawing without releasing any catch — an advantage when the other hand is occupied, at the cost of less rigid passive retention compared to a snap-lock system. The knife alone weighs 206 g.

Key features

• The 55 HRC steel blade strikes a good balance between edge retention and field sharpenability, without specialist tools.
• The spine serrations cut through ropes and fibrous materials where a plain edge would require more strokes.
• The double guard keeps the hand clear of the blade even with grip weakened by gloves or wet conditions.
• The polymer sheath with thumb-break clip allows single-handed drawing, compatible with belts up to 60 mm.
• The matte black blade finish eliminates reflections without adding weight or compromising maintainability.
