Thermal scopes

Devices that form an image from the heat emitted by people, animals and objects, not from light.

What they detect and what they don't

They work in complete darkness and make a warm body clearly visible even through sparse vegetation or light smoke: that is why they are the most effective tool for detection. They do not, however, penetrate glass, which reflects the image back.

The trade-off compared to a night vision device is image quality: a thermal device shows temperature differences, not fine detail. It can distinguish an animal in woodland but cannot read a sign.

Sensor resolution and focal length determine the distance at which a target can be identified: these are the two figures to compare.

Weapon-mounted use and night hunting are governed by national regulations: check the rules in your country.
