The Miltec lightstick is a single-use chemical light source measuring 15 cm in length and 1 cm in diameter, designed for signalling, night-time navigation and marking in operational or emergency situations where electrical light sources are unavailable or not permitted. It emits white light without producing heat, sparks or electromagnetic emissions.
Activation is achieved by bending the stick to break the inner ampoule and shaking it to mix the reagents: no switch to operate with gloves on, no battery to check before use. The duration ranges from 8 to 12 hours, depending on ambient temperature: the lower the temperature, the slower the chemical reaction and the longer the duration, at the cost of reduced brightness. Users deploying it as a night marker in cold conditions can expect times closer to 12 hours; in warm conditions the intensity will be higher but the run time will shorten towards 8 hours.
Water resistance makes the lightstick usable even in heavy rain or humid environments. The lanyard included in the packaging allows it to be attached to a rucksack, a garment or a fixed reference point. The inherent limitation of this type of device is that, once activated, the reaction cannot be stopped: the stick must be used in its entirety. It is therefore suitable as a point signalling and navigation tool, not as a replacement for a rechargeable torch.
