LEATHERMAN

The Wave Alpha is Leatherman's flagship multi-tool, offered here as a bundle with the Bit Kit featuring 21 double-ended inserts (42 bits in total). Closed, it measures 102.6 mm and weighs 234 g without the kit: pocket or sheath dimensions, yet fully equipped for serious work. The Obsidian finish pairs Canyonland-coloured G10 handle scales with a Black Oxide-treated blade.

The 73.2 mm blade is machined from MagnaCut steel at HRC 60–63: a high hardness range that retains an edge longer even through abrasive cuts, with toughness that surpasses many conventional stainless steels at the same hardness. One trade-off worth knowing: steel this hard requires finer abrasives for field sharpening — a coarse pocket stone won't do the job. Like every tool on the multi-tool, the blade features a locking mechanism that prevents accidental closure under load.

The Bit Kit adds 113 g and brings 42 interchangeable bits — including eyeglass screwdrivers, Phillips #1 and #2, flat-head blades — all compatible with the integrated bit driver in the Wave Alpha. The open double-spring frame lets you deploy and stow tools one-handed, but anyone looking for a fully smooth, snag-free profile in a sheath will find the Wave Alpha bulkier than solid-handle multi-tools. The 420 steel frame with Scotch-Brite finish handles daily wear without needing extra protection.
