Once upon a time , trappers, trekkers and even soldiers did not carry sleeping bags. They carried rolls of blankets. Until very recently, wool was the best material for blankets. Then, several decades ago, Nylon fabrics appeared. During the Vietnam War, a new blanket appeared - the Poncho Liner. Ultralight blanket that also serves as a warming liner for the rain poncho.
In Australian slang , 'swagman' means a travelling labourer. Something like an American cowboy or trapper, occasionally looking for work on the Frontier. The difference was that the Australian swagman travelled on foot and carried all his belongings in a roll of blankets.
